AFTER three decades of work with South East parks and land, Robe couple Jim and Judy Smith are opting for a tree change – to Mount Gambier.
Recently recognised for their volunteering by the Department of Environment and Water, the couple each received a 30 years of service badge as well as a Parks Gold Pass.
The Smiths have contributed to the Friends of Parks groups from Robe and the Adelaide Hills, helping to protect native areas.
Senior ranger Cath Bell said the couple has worked with the Friends of Little Dip group as well as local parks staff on a “multitude of projects”.
“We really value having such passionate community members involved in the conservation of our local parks and reserves,” Ms Bell said.
“We are so grateful for the time and effort towards improving and protecting the local parks.”
Now, Friends of Little Dip are looking for new members following the move of the Smiths.
The group also needs to fill the position of president and treasurer, positions the couple will leave behind.
Mr Smith said the group’s activities can be broad, stating it is up to volunteers to decide which activities are undertaken.
“We have members interested in a range of things from re-vegetation and bird surveys to beach clean-ups and monitoring,” Mr Smith said.
“Becoming a volunteer with the group is a wonderfully rewarding way of experiencing and enjoying the park as well as giving something back.”
