Decorating seminar takes the cake

FOODIE fanatics will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in one of the state’s most prestigious cake decorating seminars directly in the heart of the Limestone Coast.

Co-hosted by South Eastern Cake Designers and Naracoorte branches, the 2019 Cake Decorating Association of South Australia annual general meeting and state seminar will be held in Mount Gambier eliminating the travelling hassle for regional decorators and passionate bakers.

South Eastern Cake Designers president Christine Heness said she is looking forward to seeing cooking enthusiasts of all shapes and forms at both events.

“It is great having it here for us South East locals as we have always had to travel to Adelaide,” she said.

“This time we get to stay in our own beds and people are able to visit and enjoy our region.

“I think both the AGM and seminar will help boost Mount Gambier’s economy growth by bringing visitors to our region who will use accommodation, buying food and supporting
local businesses.”

The seminar will feature six technical displays from a talented collective of cake decorators.

“Some people may have never seen these techniques before,” Ms Heness said.

“One technique in particular I am excited about is the fondant patterning technique, which involves slicing fondant and placing it onto cellophane so it gradually builds up to wrap around your cake.

“The ‘cakes’ being decorated will be made out of polystyrene so no one will be able to eat them unfortunately.”

The former cake business owner likened decorating to meditation.

“I did operate my own cake business but am now retired,” she said.

“I just go into my own world and make things.”

For the baker, fruit cake is her favourite type.

“I used to enjoy eating the cakes when I made them but not anymore,” she said.

“I prefer the base cake rather than the icing on the top.

“I think a lot of people are the same.”

The state’s Cake Decorating Association’s annual general meeting will be held the day before the seminar on May 24 at 7pm.

The two-hour event will be held at the Mount Gambier A&H Show Society committee room.

The AGM will involve two cake demonstrations from South East members Mandy Lynn with animal print sponge cakes and June Jones covering a cake with crackle icing.

The seminar on May 25 with begin at 8.30am and will run until 4pm at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, Attamurra.

Seminar registrations close on May 3 with event prices being $90 for members and $100 for non-members.
