MILLICENT North Primary School’s youngest students were given a taste of a day’s work as a butcher after snagging the opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at a local meat merchant.

Foster’s Foodland handed over the apron and gloves to the Reception and Year 1 students and taught them how to make sausages.

Teacher Lucy Bell said the excursion was organised as part of a study on healthy bodies and students had already visited Woolworths with a focus on healthy eating in fruit and vegetables.

“Bridie, daughter of Dave Foster, is in our reception class and we worked with the butcher at Foodland to make over 200 sausages,” she said.

“Following the excursion Fosters donated all of the sausages that were made, which was a very generous gesture.

“We decided to mark the end of the term with a whole term celebration and sausage sizzle.

“The students loved the excursion.”

Mr Foster said 15kg of meat was used for the project, which gave students the opportunity to see exactly where the classic barbecue staple came from and how it was made.

Some may say the Reception students were biased, they told The South Eastern Times the sausages were “the best they had ever eaten”.
