MILLICENT’S celebrity chef turned up the heat in the kitchen when he revealed his secret cooking ingredients, which notoriously tingle the taste buds of diners every week.

New Heaven Indian Restaurant owner Sukchain Dhaliwal hosted a cooking workshop as part of the Wattle Range Council’s Youth Week celebrations and taught participants how to cook a quick and easy Indian inspired chicken dish.

Mr Dhaliwal also served the group an inspiring story about the power of positive thinking.

He said while he was not always interested in cooking, he grew up fascinated by the meals his mother would cook for his family in India.

“I thought my mum used a magic wand in the kitchen,” Mr Dhaliwal said.

“I was amazed at how fast she could cook and the flavours.

“My study visa for Australia was approved and I decided I wanted to be a chef and that I would make it my profession.”

Mr Dhaliwal first worked as a kitchen hand where his interest for food and cooking developed.

Upon leaving his job of two years he had been promoted to head chef.

“It just shows the power of goals and that commitment and dedication does pay off,” Mr Dhaliwal said.

“We moved to Millicent in January 2014 and love living in this beautiful and supportive community.

“The community helps us and we help them where we can, it goes hand in hand really.”

The group enjoyed listening to Mr Dhaliwal’s story and were also presented with the opportunity to ask any questions while they watched him cook the curry step by step.

Millicent resident Charlotte Simmons was among the attendees, who also enjoyed the free kite flying and cupcake decorating workshop council organised in Beachport.

“It has been great to get out of the house and participate in free activities,” she said.

Over 100 local youth have joined in on the Youth Week celebrations, which started last Tuesday with a giant games and pizza night organised by HeadSpace.

The busy schedule of events culminated with Dive into Drains and Your Cup activities today.
