COMMUNITY members found their creative flair when they were hooked on a number of craft and crochet workshops throughout this year’s Geltwood Festival celebrations.

Held at the Millicent Community Art and Craft Centre over Geltwood weekend, the fully-booked workshops were hosted by Karen Duncan, Kerrie Hirst and renowned textile artist Shelley Husband.

Organiser Kathy Patten said she was pleased with the participation and popularity of the Slashy Slops and Zip Up Craft Tool Bags workshops.

“During Karen Duncan’s class, the Flashy Slops, participants learned how to be creative with scraps and had a fantastic time experimenting and playing around,” she said.

“Kerrie Hirst’s class made zip up craft tool bags.

“One woman was more of a crocheter so she was concerned the work was a bit above her, however Kerry is a fantastic teacher so everyone was given the right time and guidance.

“The workshops have definitely evolved over the years, depending on what the class is and working in smaller numbers people go away with the satisfaction they have achieved or learned something.”

Meanwhile, organisers of the festival’s inaugural crocheting workshops labelled them a huge hit.

Due to the large number of people on the waiting list for cancellations, workshop organiser Pat Muhovics said she added another beginners class.

“We had one of the top teachers of crocheting teaching us, Shelly Husband, and we were really happy with the outcome of the workshops, as well as the positive feedback from the people who attended,” she said.

“This was the first time we had crocheting workshops at the Geltwood Festival and it was popular as it is trendy at the moment.

“Due to the response, we thought we would organise an in house one with a weekend workshop to follow-up.

“The workshops have grown over the years and I always try and organise something that is different, however we like to keep the classes small for personal attention.”

Crocheting classes included Granny Square Crochet for beginners, reading crochet patterns and charts and crochet squares from granny square flair.

Organisers will start brainstorming new workshop ideas for the 2020 Geltwood Festival.
