THE so-called bitumen bandits have been forced to put on the breaks with their dodgy driveway jobs after they were tracked down in Mount Gambier last week.
The three bandits, known as ‘Tommy, Liam and Nate’, scammed thousands from two Millicent businesses after they offered to lay bitumen and fill potholes for a payment, which seemed ‘too good to be true’.
Detectives from Mount Gambier investigated a matter on the day it was reported to the police.
Persons of interest were spoken to on the day and investigations continued with the nominated people as to the criminality of any behaviour.
However, police expect the activity to stop within the region.
Sandpipers Hotel owner Pat Barton extended her appreciation towards the vigilance of community members and the work of local police.
“We would like to thank the man who recognised the bitumen bandits and everyone who was involved in tracking them down,” she said.
“I am over the moon that they have been caught, as is Will.
“If people think they are being scammed my advice is don’t feel pressured to pay up, call the police and always ask for a builders licence or something that proves they work in whatever trade they claim to be working in.”
