INDEPENDENT Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has urged motorists to slow down around buses during student pick up and drop off.
“Bus operators have expressed frustration at the number of vehicles that do not slow down to 25kph when passing a bus with its lights flashing,” he said.
“This is putting our young people at risk when they are getting on or off a school bus.”
Mr Bell warned drivers not slowing down to 25kph could lead to fines, particularly higher level penalties if found travelling at 110kph or 80kph.
“I want to remind people that a bus with its lights flashing at 25kph is either collecting or dropping off children and the vehicle needs to slow to 25kph.”
Mr Bell has met with Limestone Coast Local Government Association regional road safety officer Ali Auld, to work on a wider campaign of awareness, particularly through the schools to keep kids safe around buses.
