YOUTH INSPIRATION: Mount Gambier youth leader Alecia Sheedy has recently been announced one of three finalists for the 2019 Santos Regional Service Award. The winner will be declared at the Gala Dinner held in Adelaide, May 17. Picture: MOLLY TAYLOR

MOUNT Gambier volunteer Alecia Sheedy was left “speechless” after being shortlisted as a finalist in the 2019 South Australia’s Young Achiever Awards for her regional service.

Working tirelessly with St John, which includes leadership in the cadet division, Ms Sheedy said she could not believe she had been named a finalist.

“It was a very special moment and I was and am so thankful to those who nominated me,” Ms Sheedy said.

“I never thought something I am so passionate would ever be recognised like it has been.”

Ms Sheedy said regardless of the award outcome, the support she had received from the community was rewarding.

“The truth is, I work and put into St John and the community because it gives me purpose,” she said.

“Even without the awards and recognition I feel it has been worth it.

“For me it is about the satisfaction you get when a cadet comes in and tells you they helped a friend who was injured at school, or when a cadet is recognised for their hard work and shows a new level of confidence.

“I love what I do, the passion I have for helping youth grow and prosper into amazing humans is something I get a real joy out of.”

Ms Sheedy also recognised the calibre of other finalists.

“You do not get recognised for an award like this and then make it to this level without doing some extraordinary things,” she said.

Congratulating all the other award nominees for their efforts, Ms Sheedy said she was proud to represent the Limestone Coast.

“I thank the cadets, leaders and especially Sharon Tuffnell for believing that I can make a difference,” she said.

“I could not have saved the cadet division from closing in 2014 by myself, so I thank all the supporters in making sure it did not fold.

“I really do owe it to all of them as there is no way I would be where I am in my life.”

Mount Gambier mental health ambassador Kyra Skyes was also one of six semi-finalists for the award.

Category winners will be announced at the gala dinner May 17 in Adelaide.
