A CONTINGENT of South East Country Fire Service (CFS) volunteers recently returned from deployment in Victoria where they helped combat fires raging in the Gippsland area.
The 19-strong deployment spent time in the neighbouring state as part of a larger South Australian contingent called in to relieve local brigades after lightning strikes ignited several major blazes on February 28.
Penola CFS volunteer Ray Payne was part of the first group to head across the border.
Mr Payne said providing “fresh” firefighters was vital in controlling the blaze.
“These kind of operations are so important to take part in,” he said.
“I have been part of the CFS now for around six years and have travelled to Tasmania for deployment before.
“It is vital to help in these kinds of situations as you never know when we may need people to come to the South East.
“We worked alongside a great group of people and it is a positive feeling to come home and know you have made a difference.”
With CFS volunteers also called out to other emergency situations in addition to firefighting, Mr Payne said he was proud to be part of the organisation.
“Everyone should try to give back wherever they can,” he said.
“I had the time and opportunity to join when I did and although it is tough, it has been a really rewarding experience providing a service to our community.
“The CFS is always looking for more volunteers, so I encourage anyone who can to head down to their local station and give back.”
