Town garden group grows

GRASSROOTS: A small community cultivated project is blossoming with Penola district residents invited to join the Circle of Garden movement.

PENOLA’S Circle of Gardens group is calling all green thumbs to join the growing community of horticulture enthusiasts.

What started with small, raised garden beds in tyres has quickly blossomed into a larger scale operation.

Last year, the group started creating a large produce garden to grow vegetables for the local Christmas hamper appeals and to distribute among the community’s disadvantaged.

Now the garden project is growing supplies of tomatoes, corn, pumpkin, capsicum, butternuts, carrots, peas and other produce for the community.

Harvesting has been undertaken during tthe past month, supplies either donated or purchased by the public to reinvest money into the initiative.

New members are welcome, with the group also hoping to help those who wish to grow their own small veggie patch.

“Gardening knows no bounds, it has for years proved a great pastime, improve mental health and connect people across divides,” group member Rhett McDonald said.

“Gardening is widely acknowledged as being both practical and good for your health and well being.

“You get to grow what you want, for who you want.

“We provide advice, guidance, practical help and some start up items

“Come on board as we have more ideas, like having optional regular meet ups to share ideas, share photographs, demonstrations of garden care, preserving produce and the like.”

Visit Circle of Gardens Penola on Facebook to register interest and keep up to date with the community group.
