Prime land purchased

SALE AHEAD?: One party wants to buy this section of Millicent rail track and vacant Land. Picture: J.L. “FRED” SMITH

A PRIME piece of Millicent commercial land looks set to be sold by the State Government for the first time since the town was surveyed almost 150 years ago.

Measuring 2700 square metres, it is former railway land and adjacent to Millicent Farm Supplies.

It is located on the north western corner of Cattle Bridge Road and North Terrace and includes a section of intact broad-gauge railway line.

Although the rail tracks remain in place, it has not carried any trains for over 25 years.

Expressions of interest for the land were sought last month and closed with Millicent Real Estate on Friday (February 15).

Millicent Real Estate proprietor Valerie Jones said she was now in negotiations with one interested party.

Ms Jones said there was no interest in another block of nearby railway land measuring 4000 square metres which was marketed in a similar way.

The vacant land in question adjoins Apex Park and is located opposite the roundabout and the Wattle Range Council offices.

Members of the now-defunct Millicent Apex Club had beautified the area in the 1960s as it is located near the entrance to the CBD.

It was commonly thought the land was officially designated parklands but it is actually part of the former railway corridor between Mount Gambier and Beachport which was erected in the 1870s.

Ms Jones said she was aware the State Government was moving towards the sale of other blocks of former rail land in Millicent.

Wattle Range Council has been negotiating with various State Government departments and ministers over many years for the former Millicent rail lands.

However, last month Transport Minister Stephan Knoll advised council the rail lands would be offered on the open market.

The South Eastern Times has approached the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure for comment on its sale plans for the remainder of the Millicent rail lands.
