Love is in the air at Millicent

Valentine’s Day has arrived today with one Millicent couple re-calling the most unlikely of venues for a love match.

“Our first date was when Alan took me to a professional wrestling match,” laughed Jan Amit on the eve of the day when the patron saint of lovers across the world is honoured.

The couple had earlier met at their workplace which was the Ford Motor Company in their native London, England.

After exchanging vows 58 years ago in a registry office in that city, they emigrated to Millicent in 1966.

Fellow Millicent couple Ross and Ro Abraham are also within sight of their diamond wedding anniversary as they married at Hindmarsh’s Sacred Heart Church in suburban Adelaide 57 years ago.

Like Jan and Alan, Ro and Ross also met at work.

In their case, Cupid worked his magic at G.H. Michell Pty Ltd which is a major wool processing firm in the suburbs.

“I ended up marrying my boss,” Ro said.

“I am not exactly sure where our first date was but it was probably to the drive-in.”

They moved from Adelaide to Millicent in 1978 when they took over the management of the Grand Hotel.

The two couples happily obliged The South Eastern Times for a photograph and interview yesterday when we visited a local supermarket.
