South East Telstra customers affected by outage

OUTAGE: Telstra customers across the South East were affected by a two and a half hour mobile phone outage yesterday due to technical issues at the Mount Gambier exchange.

AROUND 30 Telstra base stations in the South East were impacted by an outage yesterday afternoon, leaving thousands of customers across the region without mobile service.

From around 1pm until 3.20pm a technical issue at the Telstra exchange in Mount Gambier triggered the outage which extended across the Blue Lake city and as far as Bordertown, Naracoorte, Robe and into western Victoria.

Telstra South Australia regional general manager Mark Bolton apologised for the disruption on behalf of the company.

“Telstra apologises for any inconvenience to customers during this time and will continue to closely monitor the local network over coming days,” he said.

No landline services were affected by the outage and any emergency calls to 000 from a mobile phone would have been diverted to a working base station from another carrier.

“This means if you are a Telstra customer your call would go to an Optus tower – this is a standard process of sharing calls across all mobile carriers for emergencies,” the spokesperson said.

It is understood several businesses – including eftpos services – were impacted by the outage.
