COONAWARRA winemaker Peta Baverstock has been crowned the “people’s champion” after accruing the most votes in the Penola Pennant’s Coonawarra Vignerons Cup social media fashion competition.
Eight entrants in last month’s Fashions in the Marquee on cup day had a second chance at success with a 2008 Hollick Estates cabernet merlot magnum offered as the grand prize.
A photograph of each competitor was uploaded to The Pennant’s Facebook page with contestants vying for the most “likes” over the week.
Ms Baverstock took an early lead and never looked back, narrowly edging out Trisha Brand and Bridget Aldridge.
Ms Baverstock won over the public with her summer-themed attire, wearing a bright patterned dress and an intricate headpiece with simple accessories to finish the look.
The dress, by Limestone Coast designer Binny, is aptly decorated with a fruit print which includes cross sections of grapes which Ms Baverstock said was fitting for the event.
For her millinery Ms Baverstock chose a piece by polkaco which was made from palm leaf in North Columbia and handcrafted by artisan women making it one of a kind.
Ms Baverstock said she was excited to be part of the competition and enjoyed watching the likes come in over the week.
“It was really exciting seeing people vote for all the different looks,” she said.
“I’m grateful for everyone’s support and, as someone who does not frequently go to the races, I definitely was not expecting to win anything.
“The competition was pretty fierce and I really loved both Trisha and Bridget’s looks – I think they were both very classic and perfect for a day at the races.”
Hollick Estates representative Megan Downer said the business was always happy to support initiatives like this.
“A competition like this is a no brainer for us,” she said.
“The community really support us so it’s important to give back in these little ways.
“Plus it’s always great to see someone enjoying our wine.”
Ms Baverstock said she was excited to win the prize and will try to hold off on opening the bottle for as long as she can.
“I think 2008 was an excellent vintage so I’m definitely excited to open it up,” she said.
“I have got a few good years until I really have to open it so I’m just going to have to try and hold off for as long as possible.
“Red is something I love over winter so we’ll see how long it will last for.”
