Sex offence charges

A SOUTH East man charged with child sex offences has been remanded in custody until next week for an ongoing bail application.

The 48-year-old man appeared in police custody in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Tuesday after being arrested for the offending.

The prosecution said the allegations were sexual assaults of an indecent nature against the defendant’s partner’s child.

It will be alleged the course of conduct occurred over a nine year period from when the child was aged seven, with the latest offending occurring on January 21.

The allegations came to the attention of police after the child recently disclosed it to her mother and she reported the conduct.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson asked the prosecution whether any threats had been made to the mother in light of the allegations.

“No specific threats, however the mother is frightened of him returning,” the prosecution said.

Magistrate Anderson adjourned the matter until next week for a home detention report to be ordered.
