HUNDREDS of people flocked to the Mil Lel Memorial Park on Saturday for the Grant District Council Australia Day celebrations.

Bathed in summer sunshine and patriotic pride, the family orientated event included a barbecue, several children’s activities and the award ceremony.

The event also included a welcome to country address by Aunty Michelle, who paid tribute to the region’s Aboriginal Boandik community.

Australia Day citizen of the year was awarded to Peter Feast, who has been an integral member of the Port MacDonnell Landcare Group for nearly 40 years.

The community event of the year award was presented to the Carpenter Rocks Progress Association.

The community group was awarded following an upgrade to the township’s hall.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Richard Sage congratulated the winners and nominees as well as Mil Lel Memorial Park volunteers for hosting the event.

“Our national day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and learn about the nation’s past,” Mr Sage said.

“It’s a time to reflect on and learn about our national journey including the ongoing history, traditions and cultures of all Australians.”

RECOGNISED: Former Grant District Council deputy mayor Brian Collins OAM received a recognition award for his 23-plus year service to council. Mr Collins retired from local government late last year.
