TWO motorcyclists with fractured legs were airlifted by helicopter to hospital in Adelaide after riding their bikes off a large sheer sand cliff near Lake George around 9.45am on Saturday.

The Victorian men aged 24 and 26, are being treated at the Flinders Medical Centre for fractured femurs.

Police said the two injured riders were taken out of the sand hills by four-wheel drive ambulance to the helicopter.

The men were travelling in a single-line formation when the first rider went over a sheer sand cliff measuring eight to 10 metres high in error and crashed, with the second rider doing
likewise.

The crash scene was a few kilometres north of Beachport in a remote location.
Ambulance crews from Beachport, Millicent and Robe were mobilised as well as the Robe-based community paramedic, Millicent Country Fire Service brigade and police.

The injured riders were in contact via mobile phone with the SA Ambulance Service emergency operations centre in Adelaide and were located by rescuers at 11am.

SA Ambulance Service regional operations manager Andrew Thomas said it was unusual for a helicopter to be used for such retrievals.

Mr Thomas said the decision was made in consultation with the retrieval consultant and was based on several factors.

He said they included the distance which needed to be travelled at the remote location and the condition and safety of the patients.

“The helicopter arrived from Adelaide in the early afternoon,” Mr Thomas said.
