Residents seek shade as summer weather strikes

I SCREAM FOR ICECREAM: Ace, Georgia and Adam Clark used tactical cooling measures by purchasing a refreshing ice cream down Commerical Street yesterday.

FROM scooping up ice cream to cruising to the coast, South East residents were scurrying for shade yesterday as peak summer weather scorched the Limestone Coast.

A forecast maximum of 43 degrees was exceeded in Mount Gambier just after 5pm yesterday as the Bureau of Meteorology recorded a 44.0 high.

Unlike several other South Australian regions, the Blue Lake city did not set any new records, still well shy of the 44.9 recorded on February 3, 2014.

It is understood power blackouts which plagued some areas of the state, including Adelaide, Port Pirie and Victor Harbour, did not impact the South East, which has historically struggled on days of extreme weather.

At the time of print yesterday afternoon, emergency services personnel had not responded to any major incidents.

A cool change is expected to sweep the state today, bringing temperatures down into the high 20s in the South East with the possibility of a late shower.
