A PLANNED cull of 30 corellas at Grant High School has been postponed until further notice.
Neighbouring residents received notification of the cull earlier this week with some planning to protest the shoot, which was proposed to take place today.
In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, an education department spokesperson said permission had been granted by the Department for Environment and Water to cull the common species due to the birds causing “major damage to the oval and surrounds”.
It is understood damage has also occurred to the school’s cricket pitch and tennis nets.
The education department spokesperson said the school had decided to postpone the action to allow further discussions to take place.
The issue generated significant commentary when posted to The Border Watch Facebook page, with the majority of users supporting the cull against the “destructive” birds.
The environment department said the long-billed corella had the potential to cause significant damage to infrastructure, ovals and lawn areas.
Resident Mark Mathusalem, who had earlier urged community members attend an on-site protest of the cull, welcomed the “very good result”.
