SIXTY handbags filled with everyday essentials and gifts sourced from the Millicent community are now in the hands of people in need.
Millicent Community Learning Centre (MCLC) student Tara McNicol’s “heart-filled bags” were delivered out into the community, providing support to domestic violence victims, people experiencing homelessness and those who are in a situation of financial difficulty.
The handbags contain toiletries, sanitary items, food and coffee vouchers, cosmetics and other gifts and were distributed by local support agencies.
The Domestic Violence and Homelessness Service in Mount Gambier has been given 30 bags for distribution while the other 30 remain in Millicent.
They have been divided equally among the MCLC, Vinnies and ac.care.
“It is amazing to see these items have been donated to people who really need them,” Tara said.
“The donors are happy to support this good cause.
“The agencies who have received the handbags are grateful and appreciative.
“Some of the handbags have already gone out in Mount Gambier.”
Speaking on behalf of Vinnies, shop manager Maureen Barnes praised Tara’s initiative and compassion.
“There is such a need for these handbags in the community,” Ms Barnes said.
“We see it here at Vinnies.
“We helped over 135 people in need in 2018.
“People find themselves homeless and the cost-of-living is rising.
“In the past year, we have helped three families who have left domestic violence situations in Mount Gambier and set them up in Millicent.”
