A MOUNT Gambier man who struck his ex-partner to the head multiple times with a port bottle has received a suspended sentence in court.
Carlo Romano Velluti, 35, appeared via video-link in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court to face the charges of aggravated assault with a weapon and breaching bail.
The prosecution said the incident occurred on October 29 when the defendant and the victim became involved in an argument.
During the altercation, the defendant grabbed the victim by the arm and she responded by pulling his hair, according to statements made in court.
This was when Velluti hit the victim with a port bottle several times before choking her on a couch.
Velluti said he had little recollection of the offending.
Magistrate Teresa Anderson suspected the defendant was drunk when the offence was committed.
“Is that because you were too drunk, it sounds like you were on the turps again?” Magistrate Anderson said.
“That is highly possible your honour,” Velluti replied.
Magistrate Anderson said domestic violence was very serious and both general and personal deterrence were key factors in sentencing.
“You are lucky she did not experience any injuries,” Magistrate Anderson said.
She said a term of imprisonment was the only suitable penalty, however cited the need for ongoing support for the defendant.
Velluti was sentenced to three months and four days imprisonment, however this was suspended upon him entering a $500, 12-month good behaviour bond.
Velluti will be supervised for 10 months of the bond.
