Metropolitan council bid unsuccessful

TRAILBLAZER: The late Gladys Smith OAM was at the helm of the then Millicent District Council between 1967 and 1980.

THE granddaughter of Millicent’s first mayor was unsuccessful in her recent bid for a position on a major Adelaide metropolitan council.

Dianna Smith-McCue had sought a position on Craigburn ward in the City of Mitcham.

Having spent her formative years in Millicent, she has lived in the Mitcham Council region for 17 years and is a speech pathologist working in education and mental health sectors.

Her late grandmother Gladys Smith OAM was the first female chairman of a South Australian council in 1967 when she was elected to the helm of the then Millicent District Council.

Ms Smith was subsequently elected as Millicent’s first mayor two years later and was still in this office at the time of her death from cancer in 1980.

Meanwhile, former Millicent and Beachport educator Carrie Adamo won a place on the Coober Pedy Council at last month’s poll.

Former Millicent High School student Bill Armfield is a new member of the Kingston council.

One of his fellow newcomers is Michael Ringshaw, who is a police officer and coordinator of the Noorla Yo-Long youth camp at Rendelsham.
