Harvest under way

BACK IN THE PADDOCKS: Headers will be a familiar sight around Millicent in the coming month.

HARVEST is under way in the Lower South East with the first grain crops recently arriving at the Millicent silos.

Viterra eastern region operations manager Jo Klitscher said the first load of grain was received into Millicent on November 30.

She said it was a load of canola, but she did not state the name of property where it was grown.

According to Ms Klitscher, Viterra’s Millicent site is again receiving canola, wheat and barley this harvest.

“Viterra is working closely with growers to provide a service that is flexible and has the ability to manage a range of grades based on growers’ quality,” Ms Klitscher said.

Growers across Millicent and district have told The South Eastern Times they expect the harvest to be highly satisfactory in terms of yields and prices.

For the week ending December 9, Viterra has surpassed the two million tonne mark in the second biggest week of the South Australian harvest so far.

Receivals picked up with warmer weather and the two largest receival days occurred consecutively that week.

More than 800,000 tonnes were delivered into the network, taking receivals to nearly 2.8 million tonnes.

Wheat deliveries have increased with wheat and barley being the two main commodities received.

Canola, lentils, faba beans, field peas and lupins have also been received.

The first load for the 2018/19 season in South Australia was a load of wheat delivered into Port Pirie by Port Germein grower Steven Mudge.

The load delivered in early October was good quality, had low screenings and good test weight.
