State Lions accolade

STATE WINNER: Lioness Club of Mount Gambier representative Meredith Dent congratulates St Martins Lutheran College student Lauren Sutherland on her success in the 2018 Lions International Peace Poster competition.

A MOUNT Gambier student’s colourful creation which spreads a message of kindness is a national finalist in the 2018 Lions International Peace Poster competition.

St Martins Lutheran College student Lauren Sutherland was surprised in her classroom last Friday with the news she was named state winner in the 31st competition.

Lauren’s entry was hand-picked from 11 state finalists, including eventual runner-up Teesh Williamson from McDonald Park Primary School, while Ashriti Sharma received an honourable mention.

Over 50 students from the two Mount Gambier schools participated in the annual competition for 11 to 13 year olds, but Lauren’s take on the theme “kindness matters” was a stand out.

Depicting a silhouette of a gymnast after having been involved in gymnastics for six years, Lauren used bright colours and rainbow patterns to promote kindness and equality.

“I kept putting it off because it kept going bad,” Lauren said.

“When I finally did it, I was rushing a bit because I only had two days to do it.

“My mum is an artist so I get (my talent) from her.”

The 12 year old thrived under pressure and her work has now been sent to Sydney, where it will be judged against Australia’s best entries.

If she wins the national prize, Lauren will progress to the international judging stage in America, which will also feature an awards ceremony.

“My friend moved to America this year and I really want to go see her too,” she said.
