Emergency repeater for region

EMERGENCY radiocommunications will be significantly improved in the South East when a new UHF CB emergency repeater is installed and activated.

The new UHF channel 5/35 repeater is being installed by the Australian Citizens Radio Emergency Monitors Incorporated (ACREM) with the assistance of Tait Communications, Forestry SA, Gambier Electronics and a number of other local businesses and individuals.

“Although mobile telephones are everywhere, there are many instances when these can fail and in regional areas UHF CB is commonly used to summon help, especially when disasters strike,” ACREM assistant chief commissioner Mick Wongung said.

“Over the years the South East of South Australia has suffered with severe fires and a lack of continuous communications.

“This could be catastrophic for farmers or locals living in the area.”

Mr Wongung hoped the repeater would help resolve some of these issues and provide another means of contact during emergencies.
