OUTSTANDING apprentices in the automotive industry were recognised at Thyme at the Lakes on Tuesday night.
The South East Automotive Industry Group (AIG) held its annual apprentice of the year awards to celebrate the achievements of apprentices nominated by their respective employers, training organisations or schools.
Mount Gambier Isuzu and Iveco apprentice Jordan Mansell won the coveted title award, named the overall industry apprentice of the year for his work ethic and attention to detail.
Barry Maney Group stalwart David Millard received the Barry Maney OAM Service to Industry Award, recognising his 38 years in the industry.
“I started in the industry in 1980 – it has been a long time and I have worked with many people I can see in this room,” Mr Millard said.
“You are only as good as the people that stand alongside you and we have had some great people over the years that have contributed not only to the wellbeing of our team, but our customers as well.
“I am very humbled to be standing up here – I wasn’t expecting this at all.”
Categories were open to full-time apprentices working in the automotive industry in the Limestone Coast.
The award categories were open to school students undertaking training at an automotive skills centre, either in Mount Gambier, Millicent or Bordertown or those undertaking a school-based apprenticeship.
AIG chairman Simon Phillips said the organisation was dedicated to the advancement of youth in automotive careers.
“We are supported by an enthusiastic representation from the automotive industry and on behalf of the South East AIG, I would like to congratulate this year’s winners,” he said.
“The AIG committee believes it is important all nominated apprentices are acknowledged – you should all be proud of your efforts.
“We are grateful to our award sponsors, without support from a number of local businesses we would not be able to run this prestigious event.”
