Innovation takes historical Penola site into new era

MILESTONE RECOGNISED: Member for MacKillop Nick McBride helps Peter Balnaves plant a London plane tree in celebration of the Penola National Trust’s 50 years of community involvement.

A FUTURISTIC twist on Penola’s historical Petticoat Lane has officially been launched with a new app offering a walk-through experience for visitors to the iconic strip.

The Penola National Trust project – titled Walk with History at Petticoat Lane – was unveiled last month as part of the organisation’s 50-year anniversary.

It is the latest feather in the cap of the forward-thinking branch which continues to embrace new opportunities available to the community.

The SA Heritage app showcases the best of the state and brings with it rich stories, imagery and legacies of the town into visitors’ pockets.

Branch members worked with its public programming team to research, write and digitise content for the new app to help new audiences engage with Penola’s history in fresh and engaging ways.

The digital experience not only highlights Penola’s history, but provides a great example of how digital tools can be used to help tell stories and connect with the community.

The branch has led the way in making Penola’s distinctive heritage a key focus of the town’s appeal, valued by tourists, residents and government alike.

The app launch was complemented by a celebratory lunch at Yallum Park.

Andy and Annie Clifford hosted an informal lunch at Yallum Park to celebrate the event, which included an official cake cutting by long-standing member Evelynne Bowden.

A presentation was also made to Christine Dohnt to acknowledge her 10-year volunteer commitment as local branch treasurer.

Speakers include Ms Bowden, Andrew Eastick and Peter Balnaves, while Member for MacKillop Nick McBride planted a London plane tree to mark the occasion.

Download the SA Heritage app from the Apple or Google app stores to experience the unique Petticoat Lane walk-through.

HISTORICAL CELEBRATION: Walter Marsh and Evelynne Bowden celebrated Penola National Trust’s 50 years of community involvement recently.
