Basketballers donate $1340 to worthy cause

WORTHY CAUSE: The Millicent Magic’s Peter Seebohm (left) and Olivia Fuller (right) present the McGrath Foundation’s local breast care nurse Margie Attiwell $1340 after a successful night raising money and awareness for breast cancer at Peter Seebohm Stadium.

A CAPACITY crowd witnessed a special night at Peter Seebohm Stadium where the Millicent Magic women hosted the Bellarine Storm on November 10 to raise money for the McGrath Foundation, with the final tally from the night now counted.

While the Magic won the game comfortably, the real winner was the McGrath Foundation and breast cancer awareness, thanks to the presentation of $1340 to the Foundation via local regional nurse Margie Attiwell.

The event was instigated by Millicent Basketball trainee Olivia Fuller together with the members of the Magic who were were thrilled to be able to contribute financially and raise awareness to breast cancer on top of hosting a successful home game.

The decision was made to support the McGrath Foundation due to the real time support basketball families have received with over half the players’ families affected by breast cancer.

The McGrath Foundation, founded by former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath and his late wife Jane, funds breast care nurses across Australia to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mrs Attiwell is the Foundation’s local breast care nurse as she services the area from Keith to Port MacDonnell.

With one in eight Australians affected by breast cancer and up to 50 diagnosis every day, the McGrath nurses are busy providing support, care and resources to their clients.

The night itself was well supported due to the many people who travelled a large distance to attend, which created an exciting atmosphere.

In just a few short hours the money was raised thanks to a raffle, donations, trading table of baked goods and a half time “big boob” shoot out.

The event was entertaining and a showcase for the Millicent women who have currently pushed towards the top of the Victorian Country Basketball League ladder.

Locals are encouraged to attend to the Magic’s next home game on December 15 at 7pm against the Warrnambool Mermaids.
