A MOUNT Gambier teen’s fundraising efforts culminated in a $700 donation to the South East Animal Welfare league last week.
Megan Reid crafted warm winter blankets to raise vital funds for the not-for-profit animal shelter, which relies on donations to cover operating costs.
The 13-year-old said she spent four months making the vibrant fleece blankets in a variety of patterns.
“The blankets were made by lining up two pieces of material, cutting a fringe at the edges and tying knots around the outside,” she said.
“I sold them for $15 each and after I sold a few of them everyone was asking to buy one.
“I ended up making and selling 59 blankets over about four months and I made $700.
“I have always loved animals, so I thought it was a good cause and I had read the shelter needed extra funding.
“I want to thank everyone who bought a blanket or made a donation – I really appreciate it.”
South East Animal Welfare League president Trevor Twilley thanked Megan for her generosity.
“On behalf of the league, thank you very much,” he said as Megan handed over the donation.
“We are really reliant on the generosity of the community in order to survive and continue to operate.
“The reality is our only guaranteed income is approximately $40,000 from Grant District and Mount Gambier City councils, but our operating expenses are over $200,000 every year.
“We rely on our staff, volunteers and the community to raise funds.”
