Dry zone declared for Robe

THE public areas of the Robe township will be declared “dry” for four days over the peak festive season.

The “booze ban” takes effect at noon on December 28 and continues for the following 96 hours.

The decision was made at the Robe District Council October monthly council meeting and followed consideration of a staff report.

Council chief executive Roger Sweetman said the alcohol-free zones were similar to previous years and an extra day was sought as New Year’s Day fell on a Tuesday.

The council has decided to engage security personnel for the Robe Oval and golf course and will inform the community of the restrictions put in place to manage activity within the township.

Over the last New Year’s Eve, there were 16 police officers on duty at Robe and revellers were generally well behaved.

No arrests were made, but 45 on-the-spot fines were issued for drinking in a public area.

A further 10 people were fined for underage drinking.
