Demon’s look to return to winner’s circle

CHANCE AT VICTORY: South Gambier will look to use its bowling attack to rip through a vulnerable Mil Lel batting lineup tomorrow in Round 2 of Barber Shield cricket at Blue Lake Sports Park. Picture: JAMES MURPHY

BARBER Shield cricket heads into its second one-day competition of the season, with South Gambier and Mil Lel to face off on Blue Lake Sports Park’s turf wicket tomorrow.

The two sides are the only ones in the competition to be defeated this season, after the tie between East Gambier and Penola last week.

South was defeated by West Gambier, while Mil Lel went down to North Sportsman’s in a disappointing display of cricket.

For the Demons, last week’s effort was also disappointing, with just 80 runs scored from only 35 overs.

Only three batsmen reached double figures, with Niall Easterbrook claiming four wickets to help bundle the Demons out early.

Ben Hentschke also made life tough for the South batsmen, with three scalps to his name.

The first wicket fell with just 14 runs on the board and the Demons were unable to improve from there.

Opener Jacob Parham top scored with just 20, while further down the order Josh Thompson was next best with 17.

With the ball South then struggled to contain the Roos, who reached 164 runs off the full 40 overs, although nine wickets had fallen at that stage.

Despite that, the Demons would come into tomorrow’s clash as hot favourites, considering the effort by Mil Lel in the opening match.

Up against the Tigers, Mil Lel was solid with the ball in hand, bowling North out in the 37th over for 131 runs.

It was a total that could have been reached, but the batting lineup simply fell apart.

All out in the 21st over with just 29 runs on the board was simply unacceptable at that level of competition.

Only Tom Nieuwerkerk reached double figures, with a long list of no-scores recorded.

Mil Lel could take some hope from the game, with Jack Miller claiming 4/24 off six overs, while Jonathan Allcock managed 3/13 off six.

No doubt the Demons would like their chances tomorrow, especially back on their home deck.
