MOUNT Gambier travel agent Sarah Bannon was the toast of the business community at the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards on Friday night.
Ms Bannon was recognised as the city’s most outstanding employee, selected from 16 nominees representing various industries.
A valued employee of Helloworld Travel since 1998, Ms Bannon has established a long and loyal list of clients and was nominated for her “unparalleled professionalism” and exceptional service.
She took out the prestigious title in front of more than 300 peers at The Barn, sharing the spotlight with a number of businesses celebrated for outstanding achievements in categories including innovation, service and sustainability.
“I was not expecting this, but I would like to thank Grant for giving me a job 20 years ago,” Ms Bannon said when she addressed the crowd.
“I would also like to thank the chamber for establishing this award and for selecting me as this year’s recipient – it is an honour.”
Chamber president Lynette Martin said it was important to acknowledge employees given they underpin the success of any business.
“Exceptional customer service is the cornerstone of any business and it is important we acknowledge outstanding employees,” she said.
“To go above and beyond the call of duty is a wonderful personal attribute to have and all nominees have clearly demonstrated that.”
Carter’s Foodland Mount Gambier received the coveted outstanding retail business award.
The family-owned business opened its doors in June last year and now employs 40 staff and supports a range of community groups.
The Carter family has vowed to never install self-serve checkouts at its stores to support South Australian jobs and ensure a pleasant shopping experience for customers.
In a coup for the chamber, AFL football legend Kevin Sheedy attended the event as guest speaker.
The evening paid tribute to three long-standing businesses inducted into the hall of fame – Baxter Hire, Ferrers Medical Clinic and Galpins Accountants.
The hall of fame recognises businesses still trading under their established name for more than 30 years for their contribution to the city over many decades.
Ms Martin congratulated all businesses which lodged submissions for judging.
“Small business is the largest employer group in Australia, therefore its success is very important to our economy – particularly in regional areas,” Ms Martin said.
“Business owners in our city not only provide employment for our community, they also provide support for many charities, sporting clubs and schools.
“Mount Gambier simply could not exist without a robust business community.
“As always, I call on the community to support local business and continue to shop locally.”
