Young drivers are given right start

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Penola High School Year 10 Caleb Lithgo, Ryan Zerk, Jacob Robbie and Brady Pahl take part in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program at TafeSA last week.

PENOLA High School students joined around 100 youths from across the Limestone Coast at the annual Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program hosted by Lakes Rotary Club recently.

The program is delivered each year to over 50,000 senior high school students from more than 650 participating schools.

RYDA is a series of six workshops over a day for high school students that challenge them to change the way they think about road safety and lay the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives.

The program focuses on cognition development, building and increasing social competency and resilience and motivating low risk behaviour.

Students from Millicent, Naracoorte and Grant high schools, Naracoorte Independent Learning Centre, Casterton Secondary College, St Martins Lutheran College, Allendale East Area School, Millicent Community Learning Centre and The Independent Learning Centre all participated in the full day event held at TafeSA on Friday.

Penola High School Year 10 student Ryan Zerk said he enjoyed taking part in the program.

“It definitely makes you feel more confident in the car,” he said.

“I currently have my learner’s licence so I think it has been a big help to me.

“We have learnt how to be safe in cars, what to do in critical situations and how to help myself, as well as others around me.”
