Energetic learning experience

GREENER IMAGE: Tenison Woods College sustainability coordinator Tom Linnell, deputy principal Liza Couzens and principal David Mezinec with Infigen Lake Bonney Wind Farm site manager Shane Kelly and Vestas area service manager Glen Wilson gear up for the Vestas information day at the college on Monday.

STUDENTS at Tenison Woods College will be treated to a full day immersive learning experience on Monday when Danish company Vestas bring its state-of-the-art virtual reality equipment to the college.

Vestas, a world leader in wind energy, will present to a variety of year levels on a range of topics, including career pathways, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the workplace and renewable power generation.

Virtual reality simulation experiences will show students and staff what it is like to work at heights of 80 metres.

The day will culminate with a session to discuss the partnership between Vestas, Infigen and Tenison Woods College at 3.40pm.

The session is open to members of the community and includes a question and answer period and opportunity to experience the simulators.

The initiative is one of many taking place during “STEMtember” at Tenison Woods College, showcasing a month-long celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The college is providing up to six activities each day for students, with some events being held for a full day with multiple learning areas covered.

Integrated learning sessions are designed to inspire and foster student’s inner curiosity for problem solving using critical, creative and collaborative skills through STEM-based activities.

The Vestas visit specifically highlights the topic of sustainability, with the theme day titled “GreenSTEM”.

Tenison Woods College sustainability coordinator Tom Linnell described the visit as a “valuable student learning opportunity”.

“I am excited to link the renewable energies industry to Tenison Woods College in a day that I am sure will capture the attention of students and staff, as well as the wider community,” Mr Linnell said.

“This partnership will hopefully be one of many as we are keen to continue to work and build on our relationship with Vestas.

“Through the innovative virtual reality experience Vestas is bringing, we hope to inspire a new generation of young people who can make a big difference to a sustainable future – this opportunity links well to our goal of enabling young people to see the potential in working in the green jobs sector.”

Members of the community are invited and encouraged to attend the information session if they would like to learn more.
