TOURISTS are being encouraged to “look out for the green foot” with the recent launch of the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail and phone application.
The trail covers the 5km stretch between Brand’s Laira Coonawarra, Ottelia + Fodder, Wynns Coonawarra Estate, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Redman Wines, Coonawarra Store and Zema Estate.
Walkers can start the trail at any of the points along the way and make their way to each winery by following the green foot signage and posts.
The initiative began with local vignerons wanting to bring a unique experience to Coonawarra.
“It is something new and exciting for our region,” Zema cellar door manager Lynn Doyle said.
“There are obviously similar experiences in other wine regions, but we were yet to have anything like it in Coonawarra.”
The idea blends a traditional winery experience with an exercise aspect, encouraging people to explore the Coonawarra winery region’s natural beauty.
Ms Doyle said people had already jumped on board with the idea, downloading the application on their phones before they set off.
“It is great to have visitors already utilising the trail,” she said.
“We have put a lot of focus on making sure it is easy to follow and well set out so no one can get lost in the vines.
“The application is interactive as well, so it shows people how far they have walked and what kind of landmarks are along the trip.”
Although it is still a new addition to the region, the trail has already proven popular with visitors and ideas to expand the project are already in the works.
“We are thinking about the possibility of pedometers, water bottles and umbrellas available for the public,” Ms Doyle said.
“There is also hope to create other trails in our region – possibly a southern trail to go along with our northern trail.
“The possibilities are endless, Coonawarra and Penola is already a winery destination, but we are always looking for ways to boost tourism here.”
Those who take part in the trail and are staying locally in the region can purchase wines at each of the vineyards and have them delivered back to their accommodation or home.
Picnic hampers are also available from the participating eateries in addition to platters from select wineries.
The group hopes to host a formal launch later in the year, but the trail can be used in the meantime.
