PAYING IT FORWARD: Subway Mount Gambier Lakes Village manager Hannah Davies was among three local stores participating in a “pay it forward” initiative, with more than 100 people forgoing a second free sub for someone in need.

SOUTH East Subway stores saw more than 100 people undertake an act of kindness for a complete stranger by choosing to donate a “footlong” for those experiencing homelessness.

The Pay It Forward Day saw guests purchase a footlong sub and drink, with the opportunity to receive another sub for free.

Customers had the choice to keep the sub for themselves or pay it forward to someone in need.

For every guest that chose to pay it forward, On The Run Subway restaurants donated a sub on their behalf to the Fred’s Van food service for homeless people.

Mount Gambier, Millicent and Kingston stores saw 101 subs “paid forward”.

Subway Mount Gambier Lakes Village manager Hannah Davies said customers were happy to donate to the homeless.

“We love giving back to the community and to the people that help support us as a restaurant and the Subway brand,” she said.

“Whether customers donated their extra sub to someone in need or grabbed it instore and gave it to someone they thought could do with a free meal on us, it’s such an amazing thing to be a part of.”

Fred’s Van coordinator Teresa Branch said the donations allowed the organisation to continue the emergency service, which provides almost 40,000 people with a free meal each year.

“The Subway footlong subs were really appreciated by those companions that we serve on the street,” she said.

“To provide good, nutritious and healthy takeaway food really makes a difference, especially during the cold winter months when we can see an increase in people attending our service.”
