Substance misuse organisation to host ‘ice’ update

A COMMUNITY information forum focusing on methamphetamine use and treatment in the region will be held in Millicent tonight.

Presented by Substance Misuse Limestone Coast (SMLC), the “ice update” follows on from a public meeting which was well attended by locals in 2016.

SMLC project officer Sophie Bourchier said while responses to the previous forum were positive, she believed some attendees may have thought the topic of alcohol was covered more than ice.

“The reason behind that is because alcohol is the second most lethal of substances, second to tobacco and more than 80pc of the population use alcohol, whereas ice is used by about 2pc,” she said.

“We talk about ice because it is such a harmful drug and education is the key to primary prevention.

“Following on from the previous forum, the community responded with support groups, however I believe they have dissolved.

“SMLC would like to talk with anybody who would like to start another support group for the Wattle Range community who has been affected by substances including ice as we have some ideas that may help sustain any groups.”

Ms Bourchier said community education, conversation and awareness could help drive down ice use.

The “ice update” is open to the general public and information is aimed at people who have not been affected, as well as family members who have or know someone who has a substance use problem.

Ms Bourchier also encouraged those with a problem who have not engaged with services to attend the forum and find out what is available.

“There is no shame in finding out what is available for your friend, friend’s child, relative or self,” she said.

“Those attending have found the specialist speakers very informative and interesting.”

The “ice update” will be held in the Millicent Civic and Arts Centre supper room tonight at 7pm.

It is a free event supported by the Millicent Rotary Club and will feature a local panel of experts, including drug and alcohol services, counselling services and agencies including South Australian Police and South Australian Ambulance Service.
