Women’s Auxiliary celebrates 80 years

THE Mount Gambier Community RSL Women’s Auxiliary will celebrate 80 years this month.

Active since 1938, the organisation supports the RSL, wives of returned servicemen and Legacy through fundraisers and volunteering.

President Margaret Winterfield has been at the helm of the Women’s Auxiliary since 1992.

“80 years is a long time for any organisation and I have been president for 26 of those 80 years,” Ms Winterfield said.

“We currently have 12 members and we will celebrate the milestone with a meal together at Thyme at the Lakes.”

Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell met with women’s auxiliary representatives this week to congratulate the organisation on its 80 year anniversary.

“What the auxiliary does is unbelievable to hand those cheques over every year and to continue giving back to the community,” Mr Bell said.

“I’m sure on a personal level it brings you joy and comfort when you have each other to turn to during certain times.

“That’s what volunteering is all about – you give and receive.”

While Member for Barker Tony Pasin was not in Mount Gambier this week, he congratulated the women’s auxiliary in a statement.

“I congratulate the Women’s Auxiliary on reaching its 80 year anniversary – a fantastic local organisation that supports the RSL, the wives of returned servicemen and Legacy,” Mr Pasin said.

“On the home front women have consistently dealt with the consequences of war. From parenting alone, running households with limited, often rationed supplies and of course dealing with the consequences of losing loved ones.

“Wartime also saw many women contribute to the war effort, particularly during World War I and II.

“Congratulations again to all those associated with the Women’s Auxiliary of the Mount Gambier RSL sub-branch on reaching this significant milestone – our community is stronger for your contribution to it.”
