Robbie rides to raise Swagtember funds

PEDALING FOR A PURPOSE: Kalangadoo man Robbie Stewart will pedal his way to Mount Gambier next month in support of Swagtember, which provides swags for the homeless.

SOUTH East resident Robbie Stewart will continue his tradition of raising funds for Swagtember this year with another bicycle ride from Kalangadoo to Mount Gambier.

Swagtember participants collect much needed donations for the creation of street swags to help Australia’s homeless.

Robbie and his partner Bianca will jump on their bikes in Robbie’s hometown and pedal to Coles Mount Gambier, a trip Robbie has completed a number of times before.

The 2018 event is the sixth time Robbie has supported Swagtember, which is a cause he feels strongly about.

“Homelessness is an issue facing communities throughout our country with little support,” he said.

“It is hard to understand how much it really impacts our region as those who are homeless tend to be invisible.

“As such a tight knit community, people feel uncomfortable about letting others know they may be struggling to the point they do not have shelter anymore, but we have to rally behind these people and make a difference.”

With swags costing upwards of $100 to manufacture, Robbie hopes he can raise at least $1000 from the ride.

“I have raised around $4000 over the years,” Robbie said.

“This year I hope to up the ante and raise a huge chunk to support it.

“We will have a sausage sizzle at Coles on the day with the funds going to that, but I also encourage people to jump online and donate as well.”

In addition to the Mount Gambier ride, Robbie is currently plotting another route to take, but is unsure where he will ride to.
