Bore supply to continue

Read More: Emergency services called to action as utility lands in Blue lake

MOUNT Gambier’s water supply will continue to be sourced from the local borefield as a utility remains submerged in the Blue Lake following the incident on Friday night.

SA water switched the supply as a precaution after a man’s car plunged into the lake and remained semi-submerged on the water’s edge.

A media spokesperson said it was unlikely the water would be switched back yesterday, despite water quality tests being conducted over the weekend.

In the meantime, SA Water’s general manager of asset operations and delivery Mark Gobbie said the water from the borefield was safe to drink.

“The water remains safe to drink and meets Australian drinking water guidelines, but some customers may notice a slight difference in taste or colour,” Mr Gobbie said.

“Water supply will be reverted back to the Blue Lake once we have had time to make sure water quality is unaffected.”

Mr Gobbie said plans were also being put in place to retrieve the vehicle, but it was also unclear when that would take place.

“Plans are being developed to remove the car from the lake using a crane,” he said.

“This will need to be a carefully planned job, taking into consideration factors like local road closures and necessary permits and approvals.”

He said the car posed no other safety risks to the community.

“We will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses,” Mr Gobbie said.
