Pine Tree Quilters unveil colourful creations

CRAFT LOVERS ASSEMBLE: Julie Smith and Kerry Hurst at the Riddoch Art Gallery ahead of the Pine Tree Quilters exhibition opening on Friday night.

A VARIETY of colourful crafts and quilts made by a group of locals will be unveiled at the Riddoch Art Gallery on Friday night.

From Avengers-themed quilts featuring Captain America appliques to intricate patterns, bags and home decor, the Pine Tree Quilters exhibition is a feast for the eyes.

The craft group last exhibited its work at the gallery in 2015 during its 30th anniversary celebrations.

Textile artist Gina Burgess of Adelaide will open the exhibition and will host two quilting workshops in Mount Gambier over the weekend.

“The exhibition will be formally opened by Gina on Friday night and as part of the exhibition she is running two workshops at the showgrounds on Saturday and Sunday,” Pine Tree Quilters member Kerry Hurst said.

The committee room at the showgrounds has become the meeting place for the group since the CWA Hall was demolished last year.

Five local women formed Pine Tree Quilters in 1985 and the group has since evolved to encompass 40 members who meet twice a month during daytime or evening sessions.

“We are not just a quilting group, we do various crafts and make decor items and bags,” member Julie Smith said.

“Our exhibition is quite diverse and shows some of the variety of crafts we make.

“We are a friendly, caring and sharing group and we always welcome new members.”

The Pine Tree Quilters exhibition will be on display at the Riddoch Art Gallery until August 31.

Call Julie Ricketts on 0407 258 603 for more information about the group.
