Trucking company rolls out new business

NEW BUSINESS: Mount Burr Community Postal Agency operator Jackie Wells and Australia Post area manager Leonie Hill recently welcomed customers to the new facility in the town’s former mill.

ANOTHER business has opened at Mount Burr in the town’s former sawmill.

The Mount Burr Community Postal Agency now shares the Thomas Drive facility with a local trucking company and Old Mill Recyclers.

The ex-mill was purchased several years ago by local residents Jackie and Bill Wells and they have added the postal agency to their existing trucking and recycling businesses.

The agency is open 20 hours per week with its weekday opening hours being 10am-1pm and 5.30-6.30pm.

Australia Post area manager Leonie Hill recently visited the site, which now has a pillar posting box and private mail boxes.

Mount Burr previously had a post office for several decades in the town’s general store.

The agency is housed near the main gate and in the timber building which once housed the mill’s quality control office.

The mill was erected by the State Government in 1931 and sold to Carter Holt Harvey 65 years later.

It was closed by the New Zealand company in 2000.

At its height in the post-war years, the mill had a workforce of 240.

Mount Burr is regarded as the “mother mill” of the region as its staff subsequently had a hand in the erection of State Government mills at Nangwarry and Mount Gambier.
