University merger explored to expand disciplines

MOUNT Gambier’s University of South Australia could be part of a new entity as two universities are exploring a merger.

Known as Uni SA, its campus is located on Wireless Road West and caters for various disciplines, including teaching and nursing.

In a message to graduates this week, University of Adelaide Chancellor Kevin Scarce said his council and the University of South Australia council have agreed to explore the merits of a merger to create a new, leading Australian university.

“What this means for alumni is that both universities will undertake extensive consultations with graduates as well as with students and staff, business, industry, government and members of the community over the next six months,” Mr Scarce said.

“It is important to stress that this is a period of consultation and therefore it is business as usual for the University of Adelaide.

“There is no foregone conclusion and regardless of the outcome of these discussions, there will be no immediate impact on our teaching and research and the academic programs our students are currently studying will not be impacted.”

The University of Adelaide was founded 142 years ago while Uni SA formed in 1992.

The state’s third university is Flinders University, which began in suburban Adelaide in 1966.
