Infrastructure spending

INVESTMENT in local roads, recreation facilities and marina infrastructure are key highlights of Glenelg Shire Council’s $52m draft budget.

Council has called for public feedback on the document, which includes a $16m capital works program in addition to a $9.9m investment in priority projects.

Glenelg Shire Mayor Anita Rank said prudent financial management had ensured council would continue to deliver high quality, responsive and accessible services to the community.

“One of the objectives of this year’s budget was to ensure long term financial sustainability for the shire,” she said.

“Under the rate capping environment, council has continued to identify sustainable cost savings that will assist in delivering priority projects and other strategic outcomes for the community.

“Our focus for the next year is to continue to deliver on the projects and services that make our shire a great place to live and respond to the challenges we are currently facing.”

Council will commit $3.4m of ratepayer funds and $6.5m of government grants to continue delivering priority projects as identified in the council plan.

Fees and charges have also been kept at a minimum with an increase of 2.25pc, as per State Government recommendations.

Cr Rank invited the community to submit their feedback on the draft budget.

“If you have a suggestion on how the budget can be improved, you are welcome to make a formal submission,” she said.

Submissions must be received by June 8 and addressed to the chief executive officer, PO Box 152, Portland, Victoria, 3305.
