New citizens celebrated

CITY’S NEWEST CITIZENS: Mayor Andrew Lee, new Australian citizens Jennifer Seager, Alrey Serrano, Laarni Salvador, Rajeev Khurana, Jon King and Member for Barker Tony Pasin.

FIVE members of the Mount Gambier community took the final step in their journey to become Australian citizens this month.

Candidates made the Australian Citizenship oath, pledging their loyalty to Australia at a citizenship ceremony in the city’s council chamber on May 3.

Mayor Andrew Lee formally welcomed the recipients and presented them with their Australian citizenship certificates.

Recipients included mother and son Alvey Serrano and Laarni Salvador from the Phillipines, Jennifer Seager from Zimbabwe, Jon King from the United Kingdom and Rajeev Khurana from India.

Soroptimist Mount Gambier presented candidates with a gift to welcome them as new Australian citizens.

Following the ceremony, the city’s newest citizens enjoyed supper with family, friends and council staff.

They were joined by Member for Barker Tony Pasin, representing Federal Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton.
Mount Gambier City Council hosts citizenship ceremonies every three months.
