Mount Burr home damaged by blaze

MAJOR DAMAGE: Mount Burr Country Fire Service captain Trevor Schultz and Wattle Range CFS deputy group officer Jeff Brooks examine the aftermath of the house fire at Mount Burr on Saturday morning.

A BLAZE caused extensive damages to a Mount Burr home on Saturday night with Country Fire Service crews bravely battling the fire.

CFS crews from the Millicent, Mount Burr and Tantanoola brigades were called to the fire at 10am as well as Millicent police and the SA Ambulance Service.

The blaze caused damaged of around $150,000 to the home on Brown Street.

A neighbour reported seeing smoke coming from the eaves of the timber-framed dwelling as the occupants were not home at the time.

Firefighters worked hard to stop the flames from spreading to other areas, but were unable to save the home.

The damage bill is estimated to be in excess of $150,000.

Wattle Range CFS deputy group officer Jeff Brooks said one of the crews was used to provide a back-up water supply, but it was not needed as reticulated water was available.

“We had the fire under control in about 20 minutes and it was another 20 minutes before it could be declared safe,” Mr Brooks said.

The house was the home to an adult female and her four children and she has owned it for the past 10 years.

She gave her name as Kelly.

“No one is hurt but everything is gone,” she told The South Eastern Times.

“I am grateful to a neighbour who raised the alarm and used a garden hose to try and put out the fire.

“He also let out the dogs who were in the rear yard.

“My mum is coming down from Adelaide to help.”

Adelaide-based specialist investigators inspected the Brown Street property on Saturday and determined the blaze had started in the laundry.

Police fire cause investigators have determined there are no suspicious circumstances regarding the fire.

Meanwhile, CFS crews promptly extinguished a small grass fire the previous day on Lossie Lane on the outskirts of the Millicent township.
