Cadet skills on show

NATIONAL COMPETITION: South Australia’s Team Torrens Flotilla members, including Cadet Leading Seaman Taylee Kerslake, listen to instructions at the National Sailing Regatta and Shooting Competition.

A MOUNT Gambier Navy Cadet has made the city proud after being placed amoungst the best in the country after taking part in the National Sailing Regatta and Shooting Competition.

While representing Training Ship Gambier, cadet Taylee Kerslake joined 10 others from across South Australia as part of Torrens Flotilla.

Showcasing great skills and team work, Ms Kerslake and her team placed fourth in division one and fifth in division two in the regatta and fourth in the shooting section.

Thrilled to be part of the event, the high achiever said it was something she will always remember.

“It was so much fun getting together with friends – it was really challenging to set my skills against other cadets from across Australia,” she said.

“It was definitely a highlight to represent my unit and flotilla, I’m very proud of the teamwork we showed working together all weekend.”

The cadets aged from 13 to 17 worked in teams of three to sail corsair dinghies or pacers at Chipping Norton Lake over two days.

In teams of four, cadets competed as individuals and teams firing in three different serials at the Sydney Olympic Shooting Centre.

National Commander of Australia Navy Cadets Captain Kerry Rayner said the annual event was a unique opportunity for cadets to come together to demonstrate their sailing and firearm skills.

“It makes me very proud to watch all these young people come together to safely and effectively demonstrate the skills they learn throughout the year,” he said.

Training Ship Gambier meets on Sundays from 12.30 to 3.30pm at O’Halloran Terrace in Mount Gambier.
People aged between 13 and 18 are welcome.
