COMMUNITY members will have the chance to learn how they can create a safer Mount Gambier for women this week and help to reduce domestic violence by taking part in informative workshops.
Held by YWCA Adelaide, the Rise Above the Pack workshops will help answer questions and provide guidance around the issue.
Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinec said it was important for community members to learn how they can make a difference to the lives of others in the region.
“It is really great YWCA Adelaide is visiting Mount Gambier again, the workshops get everyday people to reflect on things that lead to domestic violence,” she said.
“Bystander intervention is something particularly important and the options people can take to help others in those situations will be discussed in the workshops.
“Last time we had a session such as this a lot of services came, but I also encourage the general public to come along.”
Participants will walke away with the skills and confidence to be a positive bystander and safely stand up and speak out in situations where the safety or respect of women and other marginalised groups is in question.
Regional bystander project facilitator Mason Somerville said the workshops would help create a safer community.
“YWCA Adelaide has long been involved in program and advocacy work to achieve gender equality and we are thrilled to be able to deliver these workshops to a wider regional audience,” he said.
“We are excited to see community members step up to be leaders in contributing to safer and more respectful communities.”
The workshops will take place at the Mount Gambier Library on May 1 and 2 from 9am to 12pm and are free to attend.
Refreshments will be provided and participants will receive a certificate for the training.
