LOCAL children took part in a fun, yet educational program at the Mount Gambier Library this week as they delved into the history of those who served the country.
Creating giant poppy flowers, the children learnt about the significance of Anzac Day.
The program is part of the library’s 2018 April school holiday program, dedicated to Anzac Day remembrance.
Mount Gambier Library children’s services coordinator Kelly Lynch said the sessions were focussed on Anzac Day and what it meant to the community.
“It is all about the kids having fun, but also providing learning opportunities within the program,” Ms Lynch said.
The Mount Gambier Returned and Services League War Museum donated artefacts to the library which created discussion points for children and their families.
“It is important for kids to have that connection,” Ms Lynch said.
The poppies will be added to a Remembrance Wall located in the library, where community members are invited to add their own at any time.
Ms Lynch said the library’s Anzac Day sessions were always popular and this year they were booked-out quickly.
“Other sessions held throughout the month also include a creative writing workshop,” she said.
A free movie will be shown on April 24, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm for those aged 12 years old and over.
On April 26, an oil pastel poppies session will be held at 10am, while children can participate in a Morse code necklace/wristband making session at 2pm.
On April 27, peace sign dream catchers can be designed at 10am, with a remembrance candle session to be held at 2pm.
