A PETITION to support a proposed indoor/outdoor sports and recreation centre in Mount Gambier has generated “huge interest” according to the project steering committee.
The committee, representing four of the cities major sporting codes, distributed hundreds of petitions to local businesses, schools and sporting clubs across the region last Tuesday with an aim to collect 20,000 signatures in 20 days.
“The schools have really responded and we have had huge interest on social media – our Facebook post promoting the petition reached 16,000 people,” steering committee member Nathan Stratford said.
“We are very confident we will reach our goal of 20,000 signatures.”
Mr Stratford said the group had opted for paper petitions rather than an online version as the traditional distribution aligned with the group’s grassroots campaign style.
“The reason we went with the traditional paper petition is so sporting groups had something tangible to distribute so they could take ownership of the initiative,” he said.
“It allows them an opportunity to field questions and talk with people about the facility.”
